Grant Overview
Developing Climate-Resilient Infrastructures in Yukon
Yukon is experiencing the effects of climate change more acutely than many other regions in Canada, with statistically significant increases in temperature and erratic weather patterns impacting local ecosystems and communities. Remote communities often face the highest levels of vulnerability in the wake of these changes, necessitating efforts to develop climate-resilient infrastructures. The Climate-Resilient Communities Project aims to support local governments in developing adaptive strategies that address the unique challenges posed by climate impacts in Yukon.
Local communities in Yukon are distinct in their reliance on traditional land use practices and their limited access to resources. The current climatic shifts necessitate a reevaluation of infrastructure systems, particularly in permafrost regions where thawing is affecting stability. The project recognizes that many Yukon communities lack the necessary data and resources to assess vulnerabilities and plan for adaptation, which creates a barrier to effective local governance and community resilience.
Under the Climate-Resilient Communities Project, eligible applicants include local governments and Indigenous organizations addressing specific climate vulnerabilities. The application process requires a detailed assessment of local needs and a proposal for adaptive measures, supported by data-driven modeling tools. By utilizing scientific research and community input, applicants can establish plans that directly address their respective climate challenges.
What makes this project particularly vital for Yukon is its focus on actionable and community-specific solutions. The outcome-driven approach aims to build adaptive capabilities that not only mitigate climate impacts but also empower communities to maintain essential resources. As Yukon's climate continues to change, the initiative fosters resilience by promoting infrastructures that stand the test of time, ensuring that local communities can thrive in an uncertain future.
